Why Foundations Matter
When we look at a building we don’t immediately think, “oh what a beautiful foundation”. We look at the architecture, décor, roofing etc. However, what would most of this be without a solid foundation upholding it? The fact is it wouldn’t be standing especially when something like an earthquake, tornado or hurricane hits it. Time alone would cause the building to eventually sink especially the heavier the structure. The point I am making is we don’t think much of foundations, but they are extremely important especially when you factor in time or storms.
1. We must be willing to pay the price.
Foundations are not sexy or glamorous. If you look at I Corinthians 4:9-15 you will see that Paul as a wise master builder understood that those who lay foundations are willing to pay a price. Paul was willing to pay the price so that others could succeed due to his his hard work. Paul as a father was willing to lay a strong foundation so that his spiritual children would be benefited. Foundations must be laid down for others to benefit from them and someone has to do the dirty work. You more than likely work for someone who paid a price to start their business and you are simply reaping the benefits of their hard work. It took a team who was willing to pay the price through their time, energy, finances and prayers to begin the church where you fellowship.
2. You have to learn to put ‘first things first’.
Foundations are about starting off on the right foot with strong grounding. Martin Luther once commented, “I have so much to do today I shall spend the first three hours in prayer”. Martin Luther knew that foundations matter. Do you go out and run a marathon without first doing the tedious day in day out work of training? Do you just one day walk across the stage and receive a degree without putting in long hours of study? No you have to do ‘first things’ to get to the place where you want to be and foundations could be called ‘first things’. First things get you to the place where you can start building something that others will see.
3. It takes sacrifice and hard work to lay foundations.
I find most people want to do what others can see. I mean many people want the spotlight whether that is a promotion, speaking engagement, sports trophy etc. but not the process it takes to get you to that place. The question that I am going to be first addressing is, are we willing to first do the unglamorous things that will help us get to the place where we want to be? The dirty little words I am talking about are sacrifice and hard work. I have been working at losing a few extra pounds. People see the weight you lose, but they don’t see the sweat you have sweated.
4. You must understand yourself to lay the right foundation in your life.
Getting back to ‘first things’ is getting your priorities in their proper place. On a personal level foundations are about discovering who you really are. To understand the things that you must first do, to get you to where you are supposed to go, you have to first understand who you are. You don’t want to waste your time on décor and architecture when you don’t have any foundations since to do that would simply be a waste of time and money. Start taking the time to ask yourself what makes you who you are? I hope to help you on your journey and ask you the right questions so that you are established and succeed in completing the will of God for your life. I want to see you solidly grounded in Christ and the calling He has for you to fulfill.

You’ve got great insights about minitries, keep up the good work!
It’s so easy to jump into the fray without laying the foundation to accomplish the goal. Thanks for the challenging word!
